His royal heinie: King Charles to perch on bespoke Bentley pillows at coronation

Jan 01, 2024

A seat fit for a king, and his queen?

A team of craftspeople for luxury U.K. auto maker Bentley has turned out a limited series of bespoke cabin cushions — or pillows, as North Americans call them — for a fleet of Bentleys delivering their majesties King Charles III, Queen Consort Camilla and their royal entourage to this weekend's coronation events.

The team, based at what Bentley calls its Dream Factory in Crewe, England, has used a combination of fine craftsmanship and technology to digitize the special coronation emblem before adding it to each bespoke cushion by hand.

Three full days and four iterations of embroidery processing were required to achieve Bentley's exacting quality standards in the emblem, the company said in a news release, with each cushion requiring nearly 30,000 stitches.

The emblem consists of two separate thread colors and three different colorways — or, in design parlance, a range of color combinations — to contrast against the individually-selected animal hides meant to match the interiors of the Bentleys that will use them.

Much thought was even expended on naming the color options. The cushion colors include "Cricketball," "Cumbrian Green," "Imperial Blue" and "Saddle." The accent piping colors feature "Beluga," "Porpoise," "Newmarket Tan" and "Imperial Blue," respectively. Contrasting the leather, the emblems have been sewn in black, white, red and blue thread.

Each cushion for his royal hiney took over three hours to produce and uses hides sourced from livestock raised in Northern Europe, where the temperate climate and lack of barbed wire fencing reduces imperfections in the leather, trade magazine The Manufacturer reported.

The cushions will remain with some of Bentley's promotional cars after the May 6 coronation, and are not available for public purchase, the company said.

In a nod perhaps to the history-making long reign of Charles's mother Queen Elizabeth II, who was crowned in the early 1950s after the death of her father, the size and shape of Charles and Camilla's cushions are modeled from those made for Bentley's 1958 S1 Continental Flying Spur.

King Charles III, as he is now known, considered a conservationist and environmentalist since the 1970s by some measures, has planned a smaller, if still lavish, May 6 coronation than the one that honored his mother. His smaller affair is based in part on a desire to be more sustainable.

Still, the a three-day festivities that will feature street parties, a Windsor concert, and a symbolic ceremony at Westminster Abbey followed by a grand public procession. The long weekend is expected to cost British taxpayers at least £100 million ($125 million), according to the British press. Buckingham Palace has not released an official amount. But of course, tourism spending may help ease the sting.

For certain, Charles has often made pro-environmental speeches and has experimented with alternative fuels within his personal auto fleet. He once told the BBC, "my old Aston Martin, which I’ve had for 51 years, runs on, can you believe this, surplus English white wine and whey from the cheese process."

And as Britain considers itself among the global leaders in the march toward a future less-reliant on climate-changing fossil fuels BRN00, -0.25%, this weekend's coronation fleet will include two of Bentley's Bentayga Hybrids, a line of options that can switch between electric power and petrol.

GameStop's board has removed Matt Furlong as CEO. Ryan Cohen was elected executive chairman. The company said sales were down 11% in the latest quarter.
