The Nordic Teak Bath Mat That Won’t Get Soggy or Slip Out of Place

May 11, 2023

Why it's much more effective than a fabric alternative.

After one too many slippery shower exits, I decided to permanently break up with my dollar store bath mat. The unceremonious split was the result of a spur-of-the-moment purchase: I needed a quick fix to deal with a temporarily inflexible shower head that sent a stream in a single direction, ultimately spraying more water on my bathroom floor than on me. The mat I tossed was cute and cost-friendly, and provided decent coverage, but there's one issue that ended up being the dealbreaker: it didn't absorb water, which is the primary function of a fabric bath mat. Terrified as I am of slipping and falling in the bathroom, I’ve covered the entire floor with a mashup of fabric rugs, including the aforementioned one, plus a recently purchased checkered mat from Brooklinen. Together, they’ve somewhat tempered the issue, but my showering routine could be infinitely less stressful with a nicer showerhead (hi, landlord) and this Nordic Bath Mat I spotted on Amazon.

I don't own this mat, but I want to! It's almost twice the price of my more expensive fabric mat, which is more than fair considering the fact that it's made of sustainably harvested teak wood, plus it's suitable for indoor and outdoor use and comes in six sizes. So even if you have a tight bathroom situation where a closing door nearly sideswipes the toilet, the 19.6 inch-by-19.6 inch could still accommodate the space. The soft-grooved wood grain is anti-slip, and the mat is slightly elevated and sturdy enough to remain in place even on wet surfaces. Also, the slatted design is gorgeous and modern, and the oil-finished wood means it can blend right in with existing decor.

Reviewers agree that it's attractive; some have even used it to add a spa-like quality to their spaces. And apparently it's also fast-drying, which suggests to me that I could use it inside the shower and keep the cute floor mats to cover up cold tile—no soggy, slippery encounters involved.
